BREED DESCRIPTION –BOERBOEL

The Boerboel — whose name derives from the Afrikaans words for "farmer's dog" — is a massive, confident South African mastiff bred by Dutch, German, and Huguenot settlers in the seventeenth century to guard homesteads against lions, leopards, and other predators on the African frontier. Among the most imposing of all guardian breeds, the Boerboel weighs between 150 and 200 pounds and is distinguished by its blocky, flat-topped head, muscular neck, deep chest, and short, dense fawn, brindle, or brown coat, often with a black mask. Despite their formidable size, well-bred Boerboels are calm, intelligent, and affectionate with their immediate family — they are notably good with children they know. However, they are dominant, territorial, and potentially dog-aggressive, and require an experienced owner who can provide clear leadership, thorough early socialization, and consistent obedience training from the earliest possible age. They are best suited to homes with large, securely fenced properties and owners who understand and respect the responsibilities that come with managing a powerful guarding breed of this magnitude.
