BREED PROFILE - DOBERMAN PINSCHER

The Doberman Pinscher is widely regarded as one of the finest protection breeds in the world, the product of a deliberate breeding program begun in the 1880s by German tax collector Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann of Apolda, Thuringia. Seeking a loyal, fearless companion and protector for his work, Dobermann crossed several breeds — likely including the Rottweiler, German Pinscher, and Black and Tan Terrier — resulting in a sleek, elegant, and supremely capable working dog. The breed stands 24 to 28 inches at the shoulder and presents a picture of athletic nobility: compactly built, with a wedge-shaped head, a short glossy coat in black, red, blue, or fawn with rust markings, and an alert, intelligent expression. Dobermans are loyal, obedient, and energetic, bonding deeply with their families and excelling in protection, police, military, and therapeutic service roles. They require daily vigorous exercise, consistent training delivered with positive reinforcement, and plentiful human companionship; they do not thrive when left alone for long periods, and are best suited to experienced, active owners who can match their considerable intelligence and physical drive.
