BREED PROFILE - BLACK RUSSIAN TERRIER

The Black Russian Terrier is a bold, confident, and powerfully built working dog developed in the 1930s by Soviet military scientists at the Red Star Kennel near Moscow. The project aimed to produce a supreme all-climate guard and patrol dog for the Russian army, crossing approximately seventeen breeds — including the Giant Schnauzer, Rottweiler, Airedale Terrier, and Newfoundland — over decades of selective breeding. The result is a large, heavily boned dog standing up to 30 inches at the shoulder, with a distinctive tousled, all-black coat that insulates it against the harshest Siberian winters. Despite its imposing physique, the Black Russian Terrier is intelligent, trainable, and deeply devoted to its family, exhibiting calm self-assurance rather than nervous aggression. It is naturally suspicious of strangers and makes an outstanding protection dog when properly trained by an experienced owner. This breed requires firm, structured obedience training from puppyhood, substantial daily exercise, and regular coat grooming, thriving in an active home where it receives a meaningful job and close human companionship.
