BREED DESCRIPTION – ANATOLIAN SHEPHERD DOG

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is one of the world's most ancient livestock guardian breeds, tracing its lineage to the high plateaus of the Anatolian region in modern-day Turkey, where it has protected flocks from wolves, bears, and jackals for at least six thousand years. This rugged, imposing breed stands 27 to 29 inches tall and weighs between 80 and 150 pounds, with a dense double coat in fawn, brindle, or white with a characteristic black mask and ears. Anatolians are not herding dogs but independent guardian breeds that bond with their charges — whether livestock or family — and work with minimal human direction, relying on their own judgment to assess threats. They are calm and loyal within their territory but territorial, suspicious of strangers, and not suited for apartment life or passive owners. Daily exercise, consistent early socialization, and a securely fenced property are essential; this breed thrives on ranches and farms where it can fulfill its deeply ingrained protective instincts alongside patient, experienced handlers.
