BREED DESCRIPTION - AKITA
The Akita is a powerful, dignified, and deeply loyal breed originating in the mountainous Akita prefecture of northern Japan, where it was prized by the imperial court as early as the seventeenth century. Historically, Akitas hunted large game — wild boar, deer, and Yezo bear — and their ownership was once restricted exclusively to the Japanese nobility. The breed is large and heavily boned, with a broad wedge-shaped head, small triangular ears, and a plush double coat that comes in several colors including red, brindle, and white. Akitas carry themselves with an almost aristocratic gravity and are profoundly devoted to their families, yet they are typically aloof and independent with strangers and can be aggressive toward other dogs, particularly of the same sex. They require firm, consistent training from an experienced owner, early and thorough socialization, and daily vigorous exercise. Best suited to a single-dog household with a confident handler who appreciates their reserved but intensely devoted nature.
