BREED PROFILE - KOMONDOR
The Komondor is one of Hungary's most celebrated and ancient breeds, brought to the Carpathian Basin by nomadic Magyar tribes over a thousand years ago and refined for centuries as a livestock guardian of exceptional capability. Its most immediately distinctive characteristic is its extraordinary white corded coat, which develops into heavy rope-like cords resembling dreadlocks as the dog matures — a natural adaptation that provided protection against both the teeth of wolves and the harsh elements of the Hungarian plains. The breed is large and powerful, with males standing over 27.5 inches and weighing upward of 100 pounds; the coat contributes significantly to the impression of even greater mass. Komondorok are calm, steady, and deeply devoted to their charges, but they are also fiercely independent thinkers who will act decisively without waiting for a command when they perceive a threat. They are suspicious of strangers and may be aggressive toward unfamiliar dogs, reflecting centuries of predator defense. Their unique corded coat requires diligent, time-consuming maintenance; this breed is best suited to experienced owners with ample space, an understanding of livestock guardian temperament, and a commitment to the coat's extensive care requirements.
