BREED DESCRIPTION – CANE CORSO

The Cane Corso is an ancient Italian Molosser breed descended from the Roman war dogs known as Canis Pugnax, and its name is thought to derive from the Latin cohors, meaning guardian or protector. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the breed found its niche as an estate guardian, big-game hunter, and cattle drover in southern Italy, surviving largely in rural regions until a dedicated breeding revival in the 1970s restored it from near extinction. The Cane Corso is a large, muscular, and assertive dog, typically weighing 88 to 110 pounds, with a broad, square head, pendulous jowls, and a short, stiff coat in black, gray, fawn, or brindle. It is intelligent, trainable, and deeply loyal to its family, but it projects an aura of power and self-confidence that commands respect — and requires a handler equal to the task. Early socialization and rigorous obedience training are non-negotiable for this breed, and it is best suited to experienced dog owners who can provide firm, consistent leadership alongside daily structured exercise and close family interaction.
