BREED PROFILE - KUVASZ
The Kuvasz is a large, stately Hungarian livestock guardian whose lineage is believed to trace back to ancient Turkey and Tibet, with the breed arriving in Hungary during the Middle Ages where it quickly earned royal favor. King Matthias I of Hungary, who reigned in the fifteenth century, was so enamored of the breed that he allegedly trusted his Kuvasz dogs more than the members of his own court. Following the upheaval of the World Wars, the breed was nearly wiped out in Hungary — it is estimated that fewer than thirty individuals survived after World War II — before dedicated breeders rebuilt the population. The Kuvasz is a large, athletic dog standing 26 to 30 inches at the shoulder, with a strikingly beautiful thick white double coat that allowed it to blend with its sheep and approach predators unseen. The breed is courageous, intelligent, and fiercely loyal but also independent and can be assertive with strangers; early and comprehensive socialization is critical to producing a well-adjusted adult. Kuvaszok are not recommended for first-time owners and are best suited to spacious, rural or suburban homes with experienced handlers who respect the breed's natural guardian instincts.
