BREED PROFILE - CHINOOK

The Chinook holds the distinction of being America's only AKC-recognized sled dog breed developed in the United States — specifically in Wonalancet, New Hampshire, by legendary musher Arthur Walden in the early twentieth century. The founding dog, a male named Chinook, combined the power of a Mastiff-type dog with the speed of a Greenland Husky, and his offspring excelled on Walden's 1927–1928 Antarctic expedition. The breed nearly vanished after Walden's death, reaching a critical population low that earned it the title of world's rarest dog breed in 1965 before devoted enthusiasts brought it back from the brink; AKC recognition came in 2013. Chinooks are tawny-coated, medium-to-large dogs of athletic build weighing 55 to 90 pounds, with amber eyes and a gentle, dignified expression that belies their considerable work capacity. They are affectionate, calm, and devoted family companions — notably patient with children and good with other dogs — while remaining hardworking and eager to please. They require daily exercise and thrive in active families that enjoy hiking, drafting, or dog sports.
