Breed Profile - American Water Spaniel
The American Water Spaniel is a native of the lake country of the upper Midwest, developed in Wisconsin during the 19th century to be an all-around hunting dog capable of working in the region's frigid marshes and dense upland covers. Of medium size, the breed stands 15 to 18 inches at the shoulder and sports a tightly curled or wavy chocolate or liver coat that provides excellent insulation and water repellency. This breed is equally at home flushing upland birds and retrieving waterfowl, and its compact size allowed hunters to transport it easily in small skiffs. In temperament, the American Water Spaniel is eager, enthusiastic, and deeply devoted to its family, though it can be reserved with strangers and somewhat stubborn when training is inconsistent. Daily vigorous exercise — including swimming and retrieving sessions — is essential. This breed thrives in an active rural or suburban home where it receives plentiful mental and physical engagement.
