BREED PROFILE - GREATER SWISS MOUNTAIN DOG

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is the largest and oldest of Switzerland's four Sennenhund breeds, descended from Roman Molossian war dogs brought to the Alps more than two thousand years ago and subsequently developed by Swiss alpine herdsmen as a powerful, versatile farm dog. Throughout Swiss history, the "Swissy" served as a drafter and pack animal, a cattle drover, and a watchdog on farmsteads; at one point, it was so common in the Swiss countryside that it was nicknamed "the poor man's horse." Recognized by the AKC in 1995, the breed presents a striking tricolor coat of jet black, white, and rust, covering a muscular and well-balanced frame that typically weighs 85 to 140 pounds. Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are alert, spirited, and dependable — confident working dogs that transition seamlessly into loyal, affectionate family companions. They are good with children and other animals and make excellent watchdogs without being aggressive. They require daily exercise, thrive in cooler climates, and are happiest when given a job or activity that engages their considerable physical and mental capability.
