BREED PROFILE - BULLMASTIFF

The Bullmastiff was purpose-bred in nineteenth-century England by gamekeepers of large estates who needed a dog powerful enough to track and silently pin poachers without mauling them — a demanding assignment requiring a precise combination of strength, speed, courage, and restraint. Developed primarily from crosses of sixty percent Mastiff and forty percent Bulldog, the breed was recognized by the AKC in 1933. Bullmastiffs are large, symmetrical dogs weighing 100 to 130 pounds, with a broad wrinkled head, dark muzzle, and a short, dense coat in fawn, red, or brindle. At home, they are remarkably docile, affectionate, and gentle with family members, forming devoted bonds particularly with children. They are natural guarders — watchful, fearless, and self-assured — yet not unnecessarily aggressive. Bullmastiffs require moderate daily exercise, respond well to patient and consistent training, and are generally well-suited to family life provided they receive early socialization to temper their inherent territorial instincts. They do best in homes with experienced owners and a securely fenced yard.
