BREED PROFILE - BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a strikingly beautiful tri-colored Swiss breed developed in the canton of Bern as a versatile farm dog capable of driving cattle, pulling carts to market, and serving as a steadfast watchdog. One of four Swiss Sennenhund breeds, the Bernese is the only one with a long, silky coat—a lustrous black, white, and rust combination that makes it one of the most recognizable of all working breeds. Adult males stand 25 to 27.5 inches and can weigh up to 115 pounds, with a broad, flat skull and a gentle, warm expression perfectly matched by their affectionate temperament. Berners are famously devoted to their families, patient with children, and good-natured with other pets; they tend to form especially deep attachments to one particular person. They are moderately energetic, needing daily walks and play sessions, and they are happiest in cooler climates given their dense double coat. Prospective owners should be aware that this breed has a shorter-than-average lifespan of seven to ten years and is prone to certain hereditary health conditions, making responsible breeding selection essential.
