BREED DESCRIPTION – GREAT PYRENEESE
The Great Pyrenees is a majestic, ancient livestock guardian breed that has protected sheep and goats in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain for thousands of years, with evidence suggesting its presence in the region as far back as 1800 BCE. During the seventeenth century, the breed gained favor with the French nobility and was declared the "Royal Dog of France" by King Louis XIV. The breed is large to very large — males weigh 100 pounds or more — with an immaculate thick double coat that is predominantly white, sometimes with patches of gray, tan, or reddish-brown known as "badger" markings. Great Pyrenees are calm, patient, and confident, with the independent thinking required of a livestock guardian that must make autonomous decisions to protect its flock. They are devoted and gentle with family and children but are nocturnal, prone to barking, and highly territorial — habits shaped by centuries of nighttime predator patrol. They need a securely fenced yard, early socialization, and patient training; they are best suited to rural or suburban homes where their guardian instincts and vocal nature are understood and appreciated.
