BREED PROFILE - LEONGERGER

The Leonberger is a strikingly handsome giant breed created in the 1840s by Heinrich Essig of Leonberg, Germany, who sought to produce a lion-like dog worthy of European royalty — the breed's name pays direct homage to the lion on Leonberg's city crest. Unusually among Working breeds, the Leonberger was conceived primarily as a companion rather than a working dog, yet it quickly demonstrated outstanding capability as a farm dog, draft animal, and water rescue performer. A cross of the Saint Bernard, Newfoundland, and Great Pyrenees, the Leonberger combines the best qualities of its forebears: immense size and strength with a gentle, patient temperament. Males stand 28 to 31.5 inches and weigh up to 170 pounds, with a thick, lion-colored double coat, a characteristic black mask, and a mane-like ruff at the neck and chest. Leonbergers are exceptionally affectionate, calm, and good-natured — particularly notable for their patience with children — and they form deep, devoted bonds with their families. They require daily exercise appropriate to their size, moderate grooming, and attentive health monitoring; they thrive in active family environments where their warm, regal presence can be fully appreciated.
