BREED PROFILE - DOGUE de BORDEAUX

The Dogue de Bordeaux, also known as the French Mastiff, is one of the most ancient of all French dog breeds, with origins believed to predate the unification of France itself; some historians trace its lineage to the Molossian war dogs of ancient Rome and Greece. For centuries it served the aristocracy of the Bordeaux region as an estate guardian, big-game hunter, and draft animal, and it was later used as a butcher's dog and cattle drover. The breed is massive and stocky, typically weighing over 110 pounds, with an enormous, broad, wrinkled head that is proportionally the largest of any dog breed relative to body size, a short mahogany or fawn coat, and a characteristically pendulous lower lip framed by a deep-set muzzle. Dogues de Bordeaux are devoted, calm, and affectionate with their families, tending to be gentle giants at home, though they are also deeply loyal protectors of their territory. They require moderate daily exercise, consistent early training, and diligent socialization from puppyhood; their size demands early establishment of clear boundaries, and their relatively short lifespan of five to eight years is an important consideration for prospective owners.
