BREED PROFILE - ALASKAN MALAMUTE
One of the oldest Arctic sled breeds in the world, the Alaskan Malamute was developed by the Mahlemut Inuit people of northwestern Alaska to haul heavy freight loads over vast frozen distances at sustained but moderate speeds. Distinguished from racing sled dogs by their freight-hauling purpose, Malamutes are exceptionally strong and well-muscled, with a thick weatherproof double coat, a plumed tail carried over the back, and an expression of alertness and affectionate curiosity. They stand 23 to 25 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 75 and 85 pounds, with a confident, pack-oriented disposition that requires a clear hierarchy and firm, loving leadership. Malamutes are playful, loyal, and famously fond of children, but their high prey drive and independent streak can present challenges for novice owners. They demand substantial daily exercise, do not tolerate confinement well, and thrive in active households that can channel their boundless energy and enthusiasm into meaningful physical activity.
